The Truth About Thermograms

While mammograms still have a place, breast thermography ushers in true prevention -- and that's no trick

altIt's not like it’s witchcraft...That's what my wife said when we were discussing the value of thermography. With Halloween coming this month, I don't want to stir up a cauldron of controversy or deliver any unwelcome tricks. We'll just stick with the science.

While mammograms still have a place, breast thermography ushers in true prevention. Thermography has a long history of varied useful applications. Firefighters use it so see through smoke to rescue people. The military uses it for surveillance and building contractors use it to discover heat loss in insulation. Being warm-blooded creatures, thermography can digitally "map" the body through the detection of heat patterns.

As an M.D. who has been practicing medicine for many years, I am appalled at the increased rate of breast cancer.
1950 – 1 in 20
1971 – 1 in 12
2011 – 1 in 6
Breast cancer risk is supposed to increase to 1 in 3 in the near future.
I became more concerned when I found out that the United States Preventative Task Force advised against routine annual mammograms, finding they were cited as one of the factors raising the rate of breast cancer.

altOther noted authorities of medicine, including peer-reviewed literature, have issued their concerns about mammogram screening as well. These include The Lancet, The Archives of Internal Medicine, The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and the Journal of The American Medical Association.

One of the problems with getting a mammogram or sonogram regularly is that it's not the same as prevention. In other words, it's not like brushing your teeth or using dental floss to prevent cavities. It's more like waiting until the cavities have been there for a while or until they are large enough to be detected to fix them.

Dr. Oz, interviewing Dr. Jennifer Ashton and Dr. Susan Love on a show recently entitled "Mammography Special", came to the same conclusion: "Routine mammogram screening is a major factor increasing the breast cancer risk."

Thermography of the breast has been around since 1956 and its value is important, especially in early detection. Thermography is based on the principle that metabolic activity and vascular circulation, in both pre-cancerous tissue and the area surrounding breast cancer, is always higher than in normal breast tissue.

While mammography, ultrasound, MRI and other tools rely on finding the primary tumor, thermography is based on detecting the heat produced by increased blood vessel circulation associated with a tumor’s genesis and growth. In simpler terms, think of thermography as an alert. What is also great about thermography is that it involves no radiation and is not painful or uncomfortable to have done.

According to Dr. Christianne Northrup, a celebrity doctor and women's advocate, "With a thermogram, you will likely know sooner if there are breast anomalies, so you can make lifestyle and other changes to improve your health. Similarly, if you get regular thermograms and you do develop breast cancer, it will likely be found early. Therefore, many women may only need a lumpectomy, not radiation and chemotherapy, and probably not a mastectomy."

Dr. Northrup goes on to say, "The reason is a thermogram often picks up anomalies sooner than a mammogram. For example, thermography is very good at finding problems in young dense breasts, as well as women with large breasts. This makes thermography, as compared to mammography, appropriate for a woman who is high risk and wants to begin breast cancer screening early. Something particularly good to know is that thermography doesn't pick up questionable masses in women with fibrocystic disease nearly as often as mammography does".

At the Renewal Point, we have been offering Total Body and Breast Thermography because it's a preventative tool. By finding changes in your breast which could lead to cancer before it occurs, we can usually offer a variety of ways to turn the cancer away. These include removing toxins, changes in diet and nutritional supplementation.

Since the procedures at The Renewal Point are supervised by an M.D., performed by a Duke Certified Thermographer and read by Certified Thermologists, we are in a strategic place to help you with true detection, correction and protection.
