In Weight Loss, the Right Testing Gets the Best Results

Could the way healthcare professionals measure obesity actually be causing a problem simply because the test being used is too vague to determine why someone can't lose weight? That's what Dr. Eric Braverman reported on the NBC Nightly News recently, and the news was shocking for most people.

The fact that Americans are getting fatter is not earth-shattering news, but the way we are measuring it—by using an outdated test invented over 200 years ago—is! "The BMI (body mass index) is an over-simplification," says Dr. Braverman. (BMI does not actually measure the percentage of body fat. It was devised between 1830 and 1850 by the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet in case you're interested.) {C}

Additionally, Dr. Braverman feels that "Measuring only height and weight will fail to shine light on the real issue and therefore the real solution." The real solution is better achieved by measuring body composition (the percent of fat mass, lean muscle mass and water weight) by utilizing Body Composition Analysis. With Body Composition Analysis we can better determine the answers to why weight issues increase depression, anxiety, diabetes, hypertension, hormone irregularities, and heart disease. And, it gives us a specific measurement of the major weight compartments of the body, i.e. fat, muscle, bone, and water,  as well as giving us a measurement of basal metabolic rate. It is a quick, non-invasive, no pain test performed by a computer, while you sit in a recliner.

The greatest problem is that BMI only takes into account weight and height and fails to take into consideration the loss of muscle mass which is prevalent in women as they age. Dr Braverman believes, "Your fat cells are the real problem." Those cells, he notes, "are found to be biologically very active.

Fat cells communicate with your brain through the use of a hormone called Leptin. Leptin comes from the Greek word leptos, meaning "thin". It's a hormone made by fat cells that tells your body to stop eating. Until Leptin is balanced, your brain keeps sending the message to eat, like a thermostat signaling your air conditioning to turn on. It can be as hard to lose weight as trying to stop a freight train with your little finger. You will probably lose!

At The Renewal Point we stay up-to-date on all the latest treatments to combat weight gain. We now combine the measurements of Leptin Hormone and Body Composition Analysis in our practice. They give us a more complete picture and help us to create a weight loss plan custom-designed for your body, no matter what your height, weight, gender or age.

These tests, added to our already modern and comprehensive metabolic panel, help us gain the insight necessary to obtain control over your hormone processes. This method makes it much easier to reach your weight goal, forestalling a sluggish metabolism, hungry feelings, depression and fatigue.

At The Renewal Point, we offer our individualized Metabolic Weight Loss Program directed toward all those pesky hormone imbalances. The rebalancing of hormones through natural means makes it much easier to accomplish and maintain your weight loss goals.
