Imagine you’re trying out personal trainers. One is very aggressive and harsh, screaming at you to “Get on the ground and do push-ups NOW!” The other is firm but encouraging, “I know you can do this, I believe in you!” We don’t know about you, but we’d probably perform better with the encouraging trainer! Similarly, the skin responds more optimally when given the best possible treatment and respect. Our skin absolutely has the capacity to heal itself, stop the clock on aging, and reverse past damage; we just have to nurture it the right way. Every skin condition has a root cause, so we need to investigate why the skin may be resistant. So, how do we do that? First, let’s examine what the “norm” has been in the skincare world to really understand what makes our Skin Clinic different.
We know that as the years go by, the integrity of our skin changes and we experience the outward signs of aging. Fine lines and deeper wrinkles start to sneak up almost overnight, the jaw line slackens, and we lose that vitality and glow. This is when we often turn to aggressive treatments and products. The last 30 years of the skincare industry have drummed into us that strong chemical peels, “sandblasting”, and prescription-strength retinoic acid are the only effective modalities in the anti-aging effort. These overly aggressive treatments provide instant, yet short-lived, results at the hefty cost of INFLAMMATION. Inflammation stresses and thins the skin causing premature aging and a host of other issues. We know how bad inflammation is for our joints and gut, so why are we inflaming the largest organ of the body?
Luckily, at The Renewal Point, the paradigm has shifted! Let’s choose to empower the skin to function optimally by delivering ingredients to the most vulnerable layer of the skin ~ the basal layer ~ where our skin cells are essentially “born”. If we target these young, healthy cells before they start their journey upwards to “die” and create the epidermal level, our skin will look healthier for sure! We have a wide variety of different services, from healthy peels and facials to microcurrent technology. The types of products and services are tailored based on your skin, age, and a number of other factors…so the best way to get on board is to come see us at The Renewal Point Skin Health Programs! Consultations with our Advanced Medical Aestheticians are always complimentary and very thorough.
Here are some specific things you can start today:
- Discontinue the use of harsh facial scrubs like apricot kernel and walnut shell that create micro tears in the skin; while they might feel refreshing at the time, in the long run they break down skin and can even lead to infection!
- Put down the brush! Those name brand rotary brushes are luxurious (and expensive), but even the “sensitive” heads are too exfoliating for daily use. If you already own one, use it sparingly or on rough elbows and knees.
- Put that fire out! Avoid glycolic acid that literally burns itself into the skin and destroys the microflora on our skin. Microflora plays such an important role in our immune system.
- Temper the sweet tooth. Avoid white refined sugar which attaches itself to our elastin fibers making them crystallized and hard, called glycation. If you’re having trouble giving up sugar, then you might be addicted and may want to consider our neuroadrenal or hormone balancing services.
- Avoid tretinoin cream. It’s very tempting to fill that prescription, but this is that aggressive trainer we spoke of earlier personified in cream form. This quickly thins the dermis and fast!
- Say “goodbye” to sulfates. Avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulfate facial cleansers at all costs – SLS is the ingredient that allows cleansers to foam. It makes us feel “squeaky” clean but is incredibly drying and stripping for the skin. Double check that your body wash and shampoo are also SLS free.
