Novel approach using Nutrigenomics for Problematic Weight loss
Posted January 2nd, 2020
Suzanne was never able to lose the pregnancy weight from her two boys, now 6 and 8 years old. She had tried every low-carb diet out there—-Atkins, The Zone, Sugar Busters, Wheat Belly, but still struggled with that last 20 pounds. Suzanne thought she had a pretty good nutritional knowledge, and she definitely had carb-counting mastered, but decided to seek some professional advice. When she came to The Renewal Point she said, “I’ve tried everything, and nothing is working.”
Luckily for Suzanne we have been offering genetics testing for many conditions, including personalized weight loss, and patients have been pleasantly surprised with the results.
Personalizing her diet with genomic information seemed so logical to Suzanne. Why would everyone’s nutrition requirements be the same?
Rather than guessing, Suzanne ran a simple salivary DNA test. When our weight loss team got the results back, it was obvious why she was unable to lose weight on the types of diets she had tried. Using this knowledge, we were able to give her better advice. This was exciting to her. As she said, “Giving me new hope.”
Aligning an individual’s diet to sex, age, hormone balance and metabolic requirements has been the hallmark of The Renewal Point’s Metabolic Weight Loss Program for years. Now, by incorporating the power of genetics, we have exponentially improved our ability to help patients with complex weight loss challenges.
Nutrigenomics is a new science that seeks to explain how human genetic variation alters an individual’s response to dietary components, which in turn affects general health, physical performance and the risk of diet-related chronic diseases, i.e., cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes.
Enrolling in The Renewal Point Metabolic Weight Loss Program, balancing hormones and beginning a moderate exercise program, Suzanne followed the advice of her genetics profile. She changed to a 60% complex carbohydrate, 20% fat, and 20% protein with 5% to 10% from saturated fats. This was in stark contrast to her diet over the past four or five years, which was closer to 30% carbohydrates, 40% fats, and 30% protein. She returned weekly for Lipotrophic injections (fat busters) and nurse check-ups, reporting enthusiastically that in one month she had dropped 15 pounds and was feeling more energetic and optimistic than she had in years.
